What are Medicare Advantage and Supplemental Plans?

Advantage Plans (Part C) offer all-in-one coverage that combines hospital, medical, and prescription drug benefits. Supplemental Plans (Medigap) fill the gaps in Original Parts A and B, covering deductibles, coinsurance, and other out-of-pocket costs.

Supplemental plans (Medigap Plans) are private health insurance policies that help cover the gaps in Original Medicare Part A and Part B. Medigap plans are designed to cover out-of-pocket costs which are not covered by Medicare. These plans are standardized and labeled with letters (Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, etc.). Each plan offers a different set of benefits. However, it’s important to note that not all plans are available in every state. Some common benefits offered by Supplemental plans include coverage for:

  • Part A coinsurance
  • Part B coinsurance or copayments.
  • Blood transfusions (first three pints).
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayments.
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance.
  • Part A or B deductibles and excess charges.

Benefits of Advantage and Supplemental Plans

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Advantage plans provide additional benefits such as prescription drugs, vision, dental, and hearing care. Supplemental plans help minimize out-of-pocket costs by covering expenses not covered by Original Parts A and B.
  • Cost Savings: Many Advantage plans have low monthly premiums, and Supplemental plans reduce your out-of-pocket expenses, saving you money in the long run.
  • Flexibility: Advantage plans offer network flexibility, allowing you to choose from a wide range of healthcare providers. Supplemental plans let you see any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare.
